Notice: This version of the FastNet‚Ñ¢ diagnostics works with the FastNet SCSI, FastNet III, FastNet SE/30, FastNet SE, and the FastNet LAN020.
• GENERAL GUIDELINES •
If you wish to connect to an operating network after running these diagnostics, be sure to RESTART the Macintosh.
Select the FastNet product you wish to test from the Product menu. The SCSI address or Ethernet address and slot number of the device appears in a box at the lower left of the FastNet Diagnostics window. Be sure the device you want to test is indicated. If no device appears in the window, then no device is selected or no device is installed in the machine.
Select the test(s) you want to perform by clicking the mouse on the appropriate box(es) (1, 2, and 3) and clicking Run.
Be sure the proper cable connections or disconnections have been made before running each test. (see text below.)
• NOTES ON TEST 1 •
Test 1 is run with the device disconnected from the network; i.e., the Ethernet or Cheapernet cable should be disconnected from the FastNet device before you begin the test.
• NOTES ON TEST 2 •
Test 2 checks the integrity of the transceiver. For this test you need a minimum segment of cable that is terminated at each end.
More information on how the device should be connected during Test 2 appears while the test is running.
• NOTES ON TEST 3 •
When running Test 3 the FastNet device being tested needs to communicate only with a "Loopback Partner." The Loopback Partner should be connected to the same network and also running a copy of this diagnostic test.
The Loopback Partner may be a FastNet SCSI box, a FastNet III card, or a FastNet SE/30 card, regardless of which type of device you are testing.
You may use the FastNet SCSI as a Loopback Partner by loading the diagnostic code into it (running the diagnostic application) and connecting it to the same network segment as the device you wish to test. In such case, a message will appear telling you that the code has been loaded to the device as the diagnostic begins.
If you use a FastNet III or FastNet SE/30 card as the Loopback Partner, you must click on the Loopback Partner box in the diagnostics window of the computer being used as the Loopback Partner.
The Remote Loopback test is not
available on a FastNet SE or a FastNet LAN020.
More information on how the device should be connected during Test 3 appears while the test is running.
PLEASE NOTE:
• FastNet III •
If you are testing a FastNet III card, be sure that the port you are using (BNC or 15 pin D type) is the same one selected by jumper J2 on the card.
• FastNet SCSI •
If you are testing a FastNet SCSI, keep in mind that the box has its own processor and is running a special diagnostic code while you are testing. After testing, you must reload the normal operating code into the box. To do so, power down and restart both your computer and FastNet box, making sure "FastNet SCSI" is selected in the Control Panel under "Network."
• FastNet SE/30 •
• FastNet SE •
• FastNet LAN 020 •
If you are testing a FastNet SE/30, FastNet SE, or FastNet LAN020 card, be sure that the toggle switch on the transceiver board is set so that the BNC port is selected.
There is a jumper on the SE/30 board (near the upper edge of the board) labeled "P3." Be sure that the sleeve encloses the lower and center pins.
